/ Frontrunners in Horizon 2020 Secure Societies

Grøn/Bruun has assessed the funding provided to technological development within Horizon 2020 under calls for Societal Challenge 7: Secure Societies. A total of 287 projects funded 1524 organisations from 49 countries with a total EU contribution of EUR 848,6 million. The distribution is as follows:

/ Italian institutions are the most successful under call for Secure Societies with approximately 11,2% of the total funding or EUR 95,7 mill.

/ The Greek research institution Kentro Meleton Asfaleias is the most successful institution with total funding of EUR 20,6 million in 26 projects.

/ The largest part of the funding is allocated to private companies and research institutions, with private companies receiving EUR 339,5 million or 40,0% of the funding.

/ A total of 700 private companies have been funded institutions have been funded so far.

/ Frontrunners in Horizon 2020 artificial intelligence

Grøn/Bruun has assessed the funding provided to technological development within the fields of artificial intelligence in Horizon 2020. A total of 28 projects was found with a total EU contribution of EUR 28,6 million. The distribution is as follows:

/ German institutions are the most successful in obtaining funding for artificial intelligence projects with 16% of the total funding.
/ The German institution Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is the most successful institution with total funding of EUR 2,5 million.
/ The largest part of the funding is allocated to private companies that have received EUR 14 million or 49% of the funding.
/ A total of 70 organisations have been funded in 28 projects so far.

Grøn/Bruun has assessed the funding provided to technological development within the fields of big data in Horizon 2020. A total of 76 projects was identified with a total EU contribution of EUR 193 million. The distribution is as follows:

  • / German institutions are the most successful in obtaining funding for big data projects with 16% of the total funding.
  • / The Dutch institution Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht the most successful institution with total funding of EUR 4 million.  Fraunhofer and Universidad Politechnica de Madrid participated in most project with nine project participations each.
  • / The largest part of the funding is allocated to private companies that have received EUR 71 million or 36,8% of the funding.
  • / A total of 491 organisations have been funded in 76 projects so far.

/ French-Danish collaboration in Horizon 2020

Grøn/Bruun Research and Innovation Bureau is a strong supporter of EU’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. So far almost 20.000 projects have been granted which amounts to more than EUR 33 billion supporting businesses and academia in addressing major societal challenges such as climate change, energy, health and groundbreaking new research. French president Macron is also an adamant supporter of science and Horizon 2020. On the occasion of his visit to Denmark on 28-29 August 2018, Grøn/Bruun has assessed the 20.000 Horizon 2020 projects and found:

– French and Danish organisations collaborated in 546 Horizon 2020 funded projects. In total these projects received EUR 4,1 billion.

– In total, the French and Danish organisations have been granted EUR 809,7 million in these projects.  Danish organisations have received a total of EUR 293,8 million and French organisations have received EUR 515,8 million.

– The parts of Horizon 2020 in which French and Danish institutions collaborated the most in terms of individual participations where under the mobility programme Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and Societal challenge 2: European Bioeconomic Challenges.

– In terms of where the highest rate of funding was received, was under the programme parts Societal challenge 2: European Bioeconomic Challenges and Societal challenge 1: Health, demographic change and wellbeing (SC1).

/ Frontrunner universities in Horizon 2020

Grøn/Bruun Research and Innovation Bureau has assessed the EU contribution, number of ERC grants and amount of coordinator roles of top 500 universities in Horizon 2020. A total of 2061 universities have participated in 12 077 Horizon 2020 projects and 1543 universities have received funding.

/ Four UK (University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University College London and Imperial College) and one Danish university (University of Copenhagen) are top-recipients in Horizon 2020. Combined they received 9% of the funding provided universities in Horizon 2020, coordinated 12% of the projects and held 12% of the ERC grant held by the top 500 universities .

/ Universities from a total of 122 countries are participating in Horizon 2020, with universities in the UK being the most successful in obtaining funding from Horizon 2020. UK universities have so far received EUR 3167,9 million, followed by German universities (EUR 1749,4 million) and Dutch universities (EUR 1266,8 million).

/ Combined the Nordic universities (SE, NO, DK and FI) have received EUR 1623,6 million in Horizon 2020 funding. This is just below the total funding provided to German universities ahead of other European countries.

/ Frontrunners in Horizon 2020 space

Grøn/Bruun Research and Innovation Bureau has assessed the funding provided to technological development within the fields of space in Horizon 2020 under LEIT-SPACE calls (H2020-EU.2.1.6.). A total of 296 projects were funded a total EU contribution of EUR 508,5 million. The distribution is as follows:

/ Out of a total of 59 participating countries, French organisations received the highest EU contribution combined. French institutions received EUR 95,9 mill. This is 18,8% of the total funding. FR, DE, IT, ES and UK combined received 72,7% of the total funding.

/ The German research institution Deutsches Zentrum Fuer Luft – und Raumfart EV (The German Aerospace Center (DLR)) has received the most funding – a total of EUR 22,3 mill. In 40 project participations.

/ More than half of the funding is allocated private companies, followed by re-search institutions, which received 27% of the funding.

/ A total of 1014 institutions have been funded in 296 projects so far.

Grøn/Bruun har analyseret funding givet til teknologisk udvikling indenfor robotics i Horizon 2020 under LEIT-ICT opslagene. I alt er bevilget 77 projekter med i alt 253,4 mio. EUR (ca. 1,9 mia. DKK) i EU funding. Fordelingen er som følger:

  • / Tyske institutioner er de mest successfulde i robotics under LEIT-ICT opslagene med ial ca. 21% af den samlede funding.
  • / Den danske GTS Teknologisk Institut er den mest success fulde institution med i alt 12 mio. DKK i funding (ca. 90 mio. DKK).
  • / Den største del af midlerne er givet til universitet og forskningsinstitutioner, mens private virksomheder har opnået 72,4 mio. EUR (ca. 543 mio. DKK) eller 38,4% af midlerne.
  • / I alt har 362 institutioner opnået funding i 77 projekter indtil nu.
